NextStep Announces Kelly Brown, Interim Executive Director

The Board of Directors of NextStep has announced that, effective September 30, Dorathy Martel is stepping down as executive director, and long-time employee and associate director Kelly Brown is transitioning into the position of interim executive director.

Brook Minner, Board Co-Chair, stated, “The Board of Directors is so grateful for Dorathy's leadership at NextStep. While we will miss working with her, we look forward to collaborating with Kelly to create the next chapter for the organization. Kelly brings so much energy, knowledge, and community connections to the position. We know NextStep is in good hands.”

Dorathy Martel said, “I am ready for the next phase of my life and am grateful to be handing the directorship on to Kelly, whose long-time commitment to NextStep and our mission has been incredible. Kelly brings energy, a collaborative spirit, and a great willingness to learn and grow, all of which will stand NextStep in good stead in the coming years.

About her new role, Brown said, “Dorathy has left our organization in such a strong position that I know I can be successful in this new role. We’ve worked together so well – this is a natural next step for me. I am enjoying reconnecting with many businesses and organizations in our community as we plan to celebrate NextStep’s 30th anniversary during 2022 and 2023. It’s wonderful to hear from so many that they want to join us in the celebration! This is the perfect time for our organization to be making this transition.”

Brown began at NextStep as a helpline volunteer for five years before joining the staff in 2005. She started her career as the community educator and has held several leadership positions within the organization over the past 10 years.  She is a past president of Business and Professional Women, and has served as a member of the Ellsworth Rotary Club. Brown lives in Lamoine.
